Implant Retained Dentures

Our team here at The Dentist can offer implant retained dentures as an alternative to more traditional dentures.

Implant retained dentures are designed to fulfil a similar function to traditional dentures by replacing multiple teeth that may be missing or damaged beyond repair. Unlike traditional dentures, which are usually held in place via an adhesive, implant retained dentures are held in place via implants in the jaw.

Why might I need implant retained dentures?

If you have multiple missing teeth, or multiple damaged teeth that are in need of extraction, we may well recommend implant retained dentures as an option. They are just one of the replacement options we offer here at The Dentist, but patients report a greater feeling of comfort and security from implant retained dentures, than from traditional dentures. They also offer a more natural-looking finish and can help reduce bone loss which in turn can help reduce the visible signs of ageing.

What is the treatment process like?

As with all implant treatments, we first have to be sure you are a suitable candidate. We’ll do this via X-ray, checking that there is enough jawbone present for the implants to safely and securely fuse with the jaw. For this we can use a cone-beam CT scan, otherwise known as CBCT. This provides a 3D view of the area, allowing us to see exactly where the implants will then be placed. The Dentist were early adopters of this innovative technology, and often receive referrals from other practices for CBCT.

We’ll first insert the implants – which are made up of titanium posts to act as the new ‘root’ for your teeth – into the jaw. This will be done under local anaesthetic so you don’t feel anything, and we can also arrange for sedation services should you feel you need it. We’ll then apply temporary dentures for a few months. When ready, you’ll return to the practice, and we’ll apply your definitive dentures for you.
