At The Dentist, we can use bridges to repair and restore a smile that has been damaged by missing teeth.

Bridges are a very popular way to fill in a gap left by a missing tooth or teeth. Designed to literally ‘bridge’ the gap left by the missing tooth, they normally comprise of a prosthetic tooth (or teeth), and a dental crown on either side that is attached to the anchor teeth.

Why do I need a bridge?

At The Dentist, our team always recommend replacing a missing tooth or teeth wherever possible. A bridge is a very popular way of doing this, as it is not only effective and durable but cost-effective too.

Which bridge types are available?

At The Dentist, we most commonly place conventional bridges and resin-retained bridges/resin-bonded bridges.

What is the treatment actually like?

After determining that a replacement is necessary, and discussing all your options, you will come back into the practice to have your bridge prepared. We’ll first administer a local anaesthetic so that you don’t experience any discomfort during the treatment.

For a conventional bridge, we’ll then prepare the teeth on either side of the gap, which will become your ‘anchor’ teeth. These teeth will act as support structures for the new prosthetic tooth and will need to be filed down so that we can fit the crowns over them.

Next, we’ll take an impression or digital scan of the mouth, from which a skilled dental technician will make your unique bridge. There will be a wait of a few weeks while the bridge is made – in the meantime, we’ll fit you with a temporary bridge. Once the definitive bridge is ready, we’ll fit it for you here at the practice, making sure it is comfortable and secure before cementing it into place.

Resin-retained/resin-bonded bridges present a more minimally-invasive option with the prosthetic tooth attached to the adjacent support teeth using composite resin cement. These bridge types require less tooth preparation but aren’t always an option, depending on each individual case. This is why an initial consultation and our patient-centred, bespoke attitude is important.

How do I take care of my bridge once it’s been applied?

Bridges do require some special care and cleaning, and we’ll be sure to go through all the ways you need to pay extra attention to them in order to ensure your overall long-term oral health.

How long do bridges last?

Most bridges we place are made with a ceramic material that can last 10-15 years with good oral care and attention. For resin retained bridges the lifespan is usually 5-10 years.
